Fairfax County’s Little Hunting Creek force main replacement project will improve the sewer system serving Stratford Landing, Wessynton, Surrey on the Potomac, and nearby communities.
Purpose & Details
The old sewer pipes are at risk of leaking, disrupting service, and causing problems that could harm the community and the environment. The project will prevent these issues by installing almost 4,600 feet of new, stronger pipes to keep the sewer system working well.
The project will install the new pipes about 70 feet below the creek using a method called Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). HDD has three main steps: drilling a small hole, making it bigger, and pulling the new pipe through. These 36” pipes were prepared along the Wessynton Forest Trail. HDD avoids disturbing the creek bed, minimizes environmental impact, preserves the natural landscape, reduces digging, and protects local wildlife.
Open cut methods will be used to install 30” pipes to connect this new line to the existing
system near Surrey Dr. and Surrey Ct. Current Progress & Upcoming Work Current Progress as of 03/14/2025:
- HDD: 80% complete.
- Open Cut: Not started yet.
Upcoming work
March 2025:
- HDD: Finish reaming up to 48 inches and prepare for pulling the pipe through
- Open Cut: Begin installation at Surrey Ct. and Surrey Dr.
Spring to Summer 2025:
- HDD: Complete pulling the pipe through
- Open Cut: Continue installation along Surrey Dr., the Wessynton Swim & Tennis Club’s access road, and Wessynton Way
- Final restoration
- Spring 2026: Overall project completion.

Impacts on Surrounding Communities
Construction will affect neighborhoods along Little Hunting Creek:
- Construction Activities: Residents will see construction crews and equipment in their neighborhoods. In Stratford Landing on the east side, work will focus on the Pump Station near Stockton Pkwy and Londonderry Rd. In Wessynton and Surrey on the
Potomac on the west side, construction will happen on the roadway, the Trail, the Club, and the common area near Surrey Ct. We will give advance notice of any temporary road closures and detours. Construction zones will be clearly marked and will include safety measures to keep everyone safe.
- Community Benefits: Installing the new pipes will make the sewer system more dependable by reducing leaks and spills. These upgrades will enhance residents’ quality of life, provide long-lasting benefits, and support future growth.
To keep everyone safe, please stay away from construction areas and obey all posted warning signs and barriers.
